Are you frustrated you are having to repeat yourself? Are you finding that people can’t hear you as well as they used to? Have you lost some of your confidence to chat with family and friends? Or are you looking for ways to pro-actively strengthen your voice so that you can keep it strong and clear for your life with PD?
If this sounds like you, or someone you care about, we may have just the treatment programme for you with our Specialist LSVT- Certified Speech Therapist.
At Simpson Physiotherapy, we are delighted to offer our clients LSVT speech therapy with our resident LSVT-certified therapist. We are the only Parkinson’s focused physiotherapy clinic in Glasgow that can offer this specialised treatment programme.
LSVT, which stands for Lee Silverman Voice Treatment, is a the ‘Gold Standard’ evidenced based speech therapy programme designed specifically for people with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions, including stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS), motor neuron disease (MND), Guillan Barre, Acquired Brain Injuries (ABI) and many more.
People with PD often tell me of the frustrations they have from not being heard, that they struggle to chat over the phone or have conversations in restaurants and cafes. This is where the LSVT programme can make a huge difference to you and your confidence to speak to people and chat over the phone. Getting you back to confidently ordering for yourself in a cafe, having everyday conversations with your significant other, getting back to laughing and joking and keeping you able to speak for yourself throughout your life with PD or after a stroke!
The 4-week training programme will strengthen your vocal muscles, help you figure out how loud you’re being (no more fear of shouting at people by mistake!), get your face and mouth muscles working better to reduce slurring and improve your clarity of speech, and rehab your overall communication ability. Our LSVT-Certified Speech Therapist takes you step by step through the LSVT LOUD programme of exercise and sensory feedback, setting you up for success and supporting you after the course has finished making sure your voice stays strong and clear.
Neurological problems occur as a result of injury to the nervous system, i.e. to the brain, spinal cord or nerves. Neurological conditions can be acquired as a result of a condition like Parkinson’s Disease, MS or MND, others are caused by a specific or sudden injury, like a stroke, or traumatic brain injury following a fall or accident. These conditions can result in difficulties with muscle function, speech, language, swallowing and social communication.
Speech and language therapy is highly beneficial for adults with neurological problems. Our LSVT-certified specialist will provide individualised treatment plans tailored to the specific needs and abilities of each patient. The type of treatment given will depend on many factors including, the underlying cause of the neurological problem, the severity of the condition, and the area of the nervous system that has been affected.
LSVT LOUD is a speech therapy programme specifically targeting speech and voice control. Parkinson’s often causes a soft, monotone, or unclear voice due to decreased vocal intensity. LSVT LOUD trains individuals to speak louder and with clearer articulation. It retrains the brain to use a normal voice level through intensive vocal exercises.
Research has shown that it can lead to long-lasting improvements in communication, confidence, and social engagement, making it one of the most recommended speech therapies for Parkinson’s-related speech difficulties.
The results speak for themselves: Improved speech clarity, better communication, greater confidence in speaking as well as strengthening your swallow, cough, and improving your facial expressions!
LSVT is designed for individuals with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions, such as stroke, that affect speech, voice, movement, facial expressions, or the ability to swallow effectively. It’s particularly beneficial for those experiencing soft, unclear speech.
People in the early to mid-stages of Parkinson’s see the best results, but those in later stages can still make significant improvements in their voice and speech clarity, as well as improving their swallow and cough. Stroke survivors, individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS), cerebral palsy, or other neurological, and even older adults with age-related speech or movement difficulties may also find LSVT useful.
This type of therapy is ideal for people who want to improve and maintain your confidence to use voice, improving your communication clarity and ability. Making you more confident to speak to family and friends, with staff in busy cafes and restaurants, helping you maintain your independence, improving social interactions and maintain the lifestyle you want. Overall, its a great tool to support your life with Parkinson’s Disease and many other neurological conditions
Since LSVT focuses on retraining the brain for long-term improvements, it can help people sustain their progress and enhance their quality of life.
